Media
What I watch, read and play.
Film & TV
A lot of animation, plus whatever earns a seat in a theater. Everything else I watch is on Letterboxd.
Arcane
My pick for the best show ever made: characters, writing, animation, music and pacing all at the top. I've watched it three times, and every rewatch turns up more foreshadowing.
Chernobyl
Some of the best writing I've ever seen on TV.
Top Gun: Maverick
The first action film in years that actually got my pulse up. That it's about planes doesn't hurt.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Chaotic, funny, and far more emotional than it has any right to be.
The Wild Robot
Stunning visuals, a huge score, and a story that keeps going past three good endings. It got me more than once.
Soul
Quietly made me tear up.
F1
Wildly unrealistic, and pretty much everything they do would be illegal in a real race. Still a 10/10 movie.
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain
The most stunning animation I saw this year, with a simple story that still lands.
Obsession
One character wishes for a billion dollars, and honestly, same.
Hoppers
I watched it twice in one day. Somehow it's a spy thriller, a political drama and an action epic in one animated film. My pick for best picture.
Project Hail Mary
The friendship at the heart of the book made it to the screen intact. Fist bumps all round.
Sinners
Worth the rewatch for Michael B. Jordan playing twins: one double performance, two awards' worth.
Superman
Left me feeling like a better person. I might start volunteering.
The Naked Gun
The best comedy of the year, maybe of the decade.
Wake Up Dead Man
A great story. I don't know how these Knives Out mysteries stay this unpredictable.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Funny, sincere, and the most unsettling villain I've seen in an animated film.
Into and Across the Spider-Verse
The animation still looks like nothing else.
Oldboy
Ninety minutes of wondering what is going on, then fifteen I still can't believe happened.
Inglourious Basterds
Tarantino rewriting history, with the best fake Italian accents on film.
Tropic Thunder
The satire that walked and ran so later blockbusters could fly.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Wes Anderson at full stagecraft: it plays like a theatre production dressed up as a film.
A Haunting in Venice
Poirot in a haunted palazzo. The scariest thing in it is a kid.
Studio Ghibli
Nobody makes ordinary countryside days look as calm and beautiful.
Books
Epic fantasy, sci-fi and page-turners. My reading log is on Fable, and the older history on Goodreads.
The Count of Monte Cristo
My favourite book: patience, planning, and the most satisfying revenge in fiction.
The Stormlight Archive
Epic fantasy on a huge scale. The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance so far.
Red Rising
A brutal, addictive sci-fi series about a revolution that starts on Mars.
Taylor Jenkins Reid
I'm a fan of everything she writes: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Daisy Jones & The Six and Malibu Rising.
Dan Brown
A fan of the Robert Langdon thrillers: The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons and Inferno.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
A woman cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. Beautiful and bittersweet.
House of Earth and Blood
The first Crescent City book: big, twisty urban fantasy.
Anime / manga

Manga
The five I like most, in order.
Games
Long RPGs I disappear into and short games that look like moving art on my own; board games and Rocket League with friends.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Brilliant music and some of the most insane set pieces I've ever played.
Mass Effect
I love this series. The best space opera in games, full stop.
The Witcher 3
Still one of the RPGs I measure every other one against.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
An open world I kept getting lost in, happily.
Cyberpunk 2077
Edgerunners sent me straight back to Night City.
The Outer Worlds
I loved the sarcasm running through all of it.
Hades
I love tight, good-looking action games.
Transistor and Gris
Brilliant art, amazing music, and you can finish either in a weekend.
Rocket League
Car soccer. Endlessly replayable.
Catan, Wavelength, Azul and Mahjong
The best way I know to spend an evening with friends. Wingspan, Dune: Imperium and Spirit Island are next.
